Following a bicycle accident I was taken to A&E and then admitted onto WRH Surgical Clinical Decisions Unit for a stay of 2 nights. Throughout the whole experience I was dealt with promptly, courteously and professionally but with genuine kindness too which was wonderful when I was so bruised and battered. I required a surgical drain for a pneumothorax, xrays, check from maxillofacial. Departments worked easily together, all procedures were fully explained and I left feeling very lucky that we have such a professional NHS system and such well trained, skilled and dedicated staff. I was on the ward long enough too to observe that this high level of care was extended to all irrespective of the differences in personalities involved. In particular I must mention one incident. An elderly very confused patient was wandering in a slightly distressed condition. She was met with gentle concern and given the attention and time required to explore the area before being helped back to bed. Truly impressive and moving. At a time when the media is full of explorations of the failings of the NHS I feel it is vital to celebrate our brilliant system. Cynicism is so easy and damaging. Lesley Fuller
