"care of my mother in a&e"

About: Hull Royal Infirmary

Anything else?

On wednesday july 10th at 7.45 my elderly mother ( 80 years) was brought to hull royal infirmary after collapsing, we were on holiday from newcastle at the time. On arriving at the the hospital she was briefly seen by a nurse, then left on a trolley in a corridoor near some automatic doors, along with other patients. My mother was there for almost 5 hours before she saw a doctor. One of the most alarming things that i witnessed was the dried blood on her trolley from a previous patient. A kind gentleman went and got a nurse to come and clean the bed ( they were not very happy to do so) it was obvious staff moral was very low and i'm not surprised at the conditions they were working in. I understand that this hospital is going through a transition, but the place is absolutely filthy ( cotton buds with dried blood on under beds) Patients having no respect or dignity, being left in corridoors on trolleys , being sick with no curtain around them, it was like something from a third world country. Eventually in the early hours of the morning my mother fell asleep on her trolley only to be shouted at and woken suddenly by a nurse to say she was being kept in overnight in the assessment suit. I was absolutely furious, i was afraid to say something at the time as i knew i would have to leave my mother alone overnight. The following day i went to collect my mother, again, very unhelpful staff, and the assessment suit was filthy. The walls and floor next to her bed were very dusty and stained. My mother was luckily discharged, if she hadnt have been discharged i would have taken her back to newcastle myself, there is no way i would have let her stay another day in hull hospital. Infact, i got my mothers own g.p to check her out when we got back to newcastle as i had no faith wahtsoever in hull royal infirmary. The main issues that disturbed me about this hospital was; how filthy it was, how rude staff were, patients left on trolleys with no dignity and respect. It was like being in a nightmare.
