"Problems with discharge medication at Northampton"

About: Northampton General Hospital (Acute) / Nephrology

(as the patient),

My wife had a kidney operation at Northampton General hospital, went to the Willow ward then was moved on to the Hawthorne ward.

My wife was discharged from the Hawthorne ward then whilst picking up her medication there was an electrical fault and the dispensing computer broke down. We had to wait for over 3 hours to get her medication, surely they could have done this by hand? or had a procedure in place.

It was uncomfortable for my wife who had just had a kidney taken and wanted to get home.

Thank you for informing us of the problem you encountered with collecting your wife's medication following her discharge

At the time of your wife’s discharge the hospital was experiencing problems with its electricity supplies. These supplies continued to be affected over several working days whilst estates resolved the issue.

We do have contingency plans which cut in to cover all essential delivery and the pharmacy department is covered by the emergency generator, but this does cause delays and on this particular day we had a problem keeping up with demand from the wards, patients waiting for discharge medicines and Outpatients.

We apologise for any discomfort this caused your wife and hope that she is recovering well.
