"care. (lack of) post surgery."

About: Royal Blackburn Hospital

Anything else?

My husband recently required surgery to remove a kidney. We have no complaints about the pre operative care or the operation. We were told that he would be in hospital for about 5 days and would not be allowed to be in pain. The care on ward 22 was abysmal. On the evening of the operation he asked for pain relief and was eventually given 2 paracetamol, These did not help the pain and he had to plead for help. He was finally given morphine . He also asked for help to sit up in bed to try and get more comfortable and was told to put his hands behind him and pull himself up. I realise this is a health and safety issue...maybe... but if my husbands records had been read they would have known that he has several damaged vertebrae and moving about is difficult without having had major surgery. The day after the op.he was told to get out of bed at 6.30 a,m and apart from a short walk on the ward he sat on the chair next to the bed until we helped him back into bed at 7p.m.Again he had to plead for pain relief. The next day at 12.15, he was told he could go home, this was 48 hours after surgery. My son and myself went to collect him and it was obvious before we left the the ward that he was unable to walk all the way to the car. my son had to rush to find a wheelchair while I held my husband up, After care? you haven`t got a clue!!
