I was sent by my doctor for an x-ray on my lower back, when i went to the x-ray department and was seen i was asked why my doctor had sent me.i explained and they replied with i don't see why your doctor has sent you it is not worth having an x-ray just because its painful when you stand and they did not see the point in it. But because i was there they would do one and they could not get a good picture so said i will try another but im doing it quick. I was really unhappy about the way i was treated if it wasn't causing me problems i would not have bothered i felt that they were very rude to me and made me feel it was a waste of time.

We are really sorry that you felt the Radiographer was rude to you, without your name it is difficult to investigate the exact incident and the Radiographer who was responsible but we will remind all of our staff that they should give a clear explanation of what they mean.

The Ionising Medical Exposure Regulations (Legal requirements on radiographers) are that they must satisfy themselves that an x-ray is appropriately indicated for the clinical information given to them. They can be liable in law if they undertake an unnecessary x-ray even if someone else such as a GP thinks it might be necessary.

The radiographer is trained to take x-rays but is also trained to evaluate whether the x-ray will help in any given situation. Therefore the Radiographer will have had the best of intentions in mind but has clearly not explained this thoroughly to you.

We are sorry for the distress this has caused and would be happy to speak to you about this if you wish it investigated further.
