"Getting blood test results"

About: Queen's Hospital (Romford)

Anything else?

On my last visit to my consultant we agreed that we would run one more blood test and also refer me to another hospital. The consultant told me that I could get the blood test results by email in about a week. This turns out to be wrong. The only way to obtain blood test results is to either see the consultant again, (which is a waste of time for them and me) or pay £10 and wait 21-40 days to get my medical notes. Apparently admin staff aren't allowed to give out results, which seems crazy when everyone knows that if you have a blood test done via a GP, their receptionists are more than happy to give you your results on the phone. So, it's now been two weeks since my blood test, I know my results are in but they are being kept secret from me. Fortunately I was going to request my medical notes anyway as I want to go private to speed things up, and they want my notes. No doubt eventually I will be permitted to know my blood test results... I have not awarded the hospital any stars, as overall I found nothing to recommend this hospital. The hospital seems slow, inefficient, staff unhappy, unfriendly and stressed, and in more than one case unprofessional bordering on incompetent.

I am sorry to hear of your concerns, and thank you for raising the issue about blood test results. Test results are returned to the consultant who requested the test. If the results highlighted any problems, the consultant or their team would get in touch with you to arrange the right follow-up, including providing information to your GP. I can understand that it would be frustrating to not be able to access the results yourself by telephone and I will look into action that we could take to streamline this process and give patients information more quickly. Yours sincerely Dr Mike Gill Medical Director
