"Billinge Clinic: Waited 6 months for nails to be cut"

About: Community Health Services / Podiatry

(as the patient),

Care at clinic is top class. Billinge waited 6 months for nails cut.

After about 4 months my toe nails were long and thick and I had to buy a dear pair of clippers. I tried to cut them myself but made about 4 nails on toes bleed.

6 months is far too long for treatment. Impairing my walking ability. Too painful.

Dear Quality802

Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment regarding your experience with the Podiatry Service. It is really important to us that our patients tell us about their experiences. I am pleased that you did find the service to be top class when you attended your appointment at Billinge Clinic and we will pass this on to the clinicians that work there.

However, you have also highlighted the important issue that the waiting times between appointments is unacceptable and I am sorry for the extended waiting time you have experienced. We are aware that due to the high demand for the service the length of time between your visits has increased to an unacceptable length of time and we are currently trying to address this issue of bringing the waiting times down across the whole service. We can assure you that the podiatry service are constantly monitoring the waiting times at each clinical site and taking every action to reduce these with the resources we have available to the service.

Owing to the great demand for podiatry services, both new and review patients are prioritised according to clinical need. However, the podiatry service does have a fast track system for all patients with an urgent foot problem and if you develop a problem in-between your routine appointments you can contact the Podiatry Administration Office to request an earlier appointment.

Waiting list initiative funding has been made available which initially funded to staff until end March 2013. Following a further review, a further extension has been funded until the end September 2013 for three staff. This extra staffing is being utilised to bring the waiting times for new and review patients down to a more acceptable level.

We do liaise with the Commissioners of the service to appraise them of our waiting times and prior to September 2013 we will be discussing the future plan for the on-going long term delivery of podiatry care based on our capacity and the high levels of demand.

If you would like more specific information related to your appointments or feel that your foot care needs should be reassessed by your podiatrist please do not hesitate to contact me further. I can be contacted via the Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) on 0151 244 3454).

With kind regards
