I took my 20 month old to our local drop-in clinic with a rash that didn't disappear when pressure was applied. After a long wait, we were seen by the doctor. Within seconds of examining my son, he was on the phone to Lewisham Children's A&E telling them to expect us.
We got there by taxi and were quickly brought into the A&E. Lewisham's adult A&E in my experience is a calm and clean environment, much better than other A&Es I've visited. But their children's A&E is amazing. The ward is clean and bright, with lots of toys. The staff are calm and responsive. We walked in and were seen immediately by calm, efficient staff who examined our son almost immediately.
Their initial diagnosis was that it wasn't meningitis, but that they would do a range of tests to be sure. Throughout, they kept us informed and tried their best to distract him from the pain during blood tests and to engage him with the others.
As soon as we got a diagnosis (HSP), we were told what to expect in the next few months, and discharged quickly. Amazing staff in a great hospital.
