After my operation it was very hot on ward C5. Mum wheeled me to the front entrance for some much needed fresh air. As we approached the entrance I could smell cigarette smoke. All the benches were taken by patients and visitors sitting smoking, depite the fact it clearly states no smoking. The smell of smoke was unacceptable and you have to actually walk in cigarette ends. These were stuck to the wheels of my chair and brought back into the hospital! If this is the trusts housekeeping that the public can see, i ask what is their housekeeping like in areas that we dont see!

We appreciate we can and must do more to tackle smoking outside our hospitals. That said, much work is already underway (working with partners and the local community) to tackle this problem.

In October ’12 we had our third week of action to tackle smokers on-site. Staff, Community Protection Officers and volunteers asked people to stop smoking or to move off hospital property. New Leaf and Nottingham City Smoke-free Homes were on hand to promote ways to stop smoking. 21 on-the-spot fines were issued to both staff and the public for littering (mainly for the discard of cigarette butts). Nottingham City Council has committed to weekly cleaning the council-owned areas at the QMC entrance.

We continue to work with our local residents, staff and local community to consider what more we can do to stop smoking on our premises and ensure our environment is kept as clean as possible. We would like to reassure you that we prioritise, as you would expect, cleaning of our clinical (ward and clinic) areas. Our audit results show continued year-on-year improvement in standards of cleanliness in these areas.

Our patients informed us, when developing our quality and safety priorities for 13/14 that they wish us to do more to improve cleanliness of public areas, including the areas you have described. We are giving careful consideration to how we do so.
