"I do feel the hospital could have talked to me about things that could go wrong"

About: Adult community services / Stoma prescription service Rotherham Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as a service user),

I use the stoma prescription service which is very good. The people are very helpful and kind – the prescriptions are delivered within 2 days of me calling them.

I’m getting on OK with the catheter bags but I do feel the hospital could have talked to me about things that could go wrong so that I would be better prepared. I was in hospital for an appointment when the bag leaked – I ended up going home in my coat over a hospital gown. I’ve also had a few problems at home – If I’d known that things like this could happen I would not have been so upset when they did happen, I could have coped better.

Dear Knowledge150, thank you for your posting on Patient Opinion. I’m sorry to hear you have had problems with your catheter bag leaking, unfortunately catheter bags do occasionally leak, it is important you are made aware that this can happen when the catheter is first inserted. To try and ensure everyone discharged from hospital has the correct information, we have been working with our service user group to develop an information pack. This pack will contain information telling you what to do if you experience problems with your catheter or any of your drainage equipment and will be given to all patients with a catheter as they leave hospital. Unfortunately this pack has come too late for you but hopefully it will prevent other patients experiencing similar problems.

If you have problems with bags leaking at home you should ring the continence service on 423369, they will be able to advise you what to do and make arrangements for you to receive alternative products.

With best wishes,

Kerry
