I had a breakdown 5 years ago. I worked with a fantastic cbt therapist who got me back on my feet and back to work. Two years ago I had a relapse and went to my gp for help. I was offered counselling as a short-term solution because the list for cbt was so long.
The therapist sat behind the GPs desk and looked down on me in the patients seat which instinctivley felt wrong. In the first session her mobile went off. I didn't improve at all in her care and after the alloted number of sessions didn't feel any better. I was then offered therapy through a private company commissioned by the NHS. They arranged to see patients in a local community centre on a Saturday morning. There was also a childrens playgroup going on in the same building.
I was seen by a cousellor who brought her notes from her couselling course with her and photocopied bits for me to read. She suggested that my husband was at the root of my problems and had I though about leaving him (not a very good idea when in the middle of a deep depression). She also kept asking me whether she was helping and what was it that my original therapist had done that had been so good? I truly believe that she was either unqualified, half way through a course, or just dabbling in it. She was dangerous. I believe the company she worked for had taken on too much, won the contract for the service and then not had the staff to deliver. someone should be accountable for that.
I have been very very depressed. I really need proper help. What I have been given has been dangerous. I am still on the list for proper cbt but I am struggling. How can the NHS be farming out services like this without any accountability.
