When I was 7 weeks pregnant with my first pregnancy I was put onto the EPU at Hillingdon Hospital as I was suffering badly with hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). As a Student Nurse myself I am aware how hard Nurses have to work and how sometimes patients can become irritable but as Nurses we are trained to deal with this and provide the best care, however the Nurse's on the Marina Ward were rude and unsympathetic towards me. I had high levels of ketones in my urine and was severely dehydrated and vomiting up blood due to my HG and was told by a doctor in A&E that I needed a drip to hydrate my body and be monitored, I was then admitted onto the EPU at about 8pm and left to sit on my bed, after sitting and waiting 2 hours on my bed for someone to give me my drip and medication or to even ask if I needed anything I had to go to the Nurses Station and ask myself (May I add they were all just sitting there talking and joking around) The Nurse told me to go back to my bed and will see me shortly, after putting in my IV drip she said, you will need to take the drip and trolley with you everywhere and will be your new best friend but it shouldn't cause you any hassle or problems unlike you. I felt shocked and disgusted at her rude and unfunny attitude I really felt like saying, "well if you feel that way then you should hand over your Nurse Registration Number over to the NMC and re think your career." During the night I woke up to find my drip was empty and that there was blood running into the tube of the drip and wondered why no one had changed it or how long it had been empty for I went to the Night Nurse who was reading a magazine and I said there's blood running into my drip and the bag is empty to which she replied sorry i was meant to change it but I didn't want to wake you up. Another Night Nurse came in to give me an anti sickness injection in my thigh and one in my buttocks, I let out an "ouch" as it did hurt and instead of making me feel better or reassure me her reply was, "well if you think that hurts then your going to be rubbish in child birth!" After she went I actually cried. I am now 35 weeks pregnant and I'm absolutely scared about receiving this kind of care in the labour and after care wards. The Nurses on the Marina Ward really need think before they speak and to be taught or re trained or even read the NMC rules and regulations again because from my experience as a Student Nurse if I had there attitude and poor practice I would be kicked off my course and training, Nurses like them give Nurses who actually care a bad name.
