"Paediatric outpatients"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Paediatrics

(as a parent/guardian),

I moved into the area in November when my daughter, who has a diagnosis of reflux and associated poor feeding, was 4. 5 months old. She had been seen by a paediatrician in our previous trust on a monthly basis and she was reviewed fortnightly by phone by a dietician.

After moving, we were referred to the rapid access clinic at east surrey and were seen about a month afterwards. The paediatrician referred us to the dietician and after initially being told we would have to wait over two months to see someone, she was seen about two weeks after that.

Following these two appointments we were seen at Crawley in February by a different paediatrician, , an appointment for which I never received a letter, just a phone call on the day of the appointment to let me know. Since that we have not seen a paediatrician. When we went through a particularly bad period of feeding with my daughter, we were told to ring the department to bring her appointment (which we hadn't actually been given) forward. They did this... By two weeks. This was supposed to be in may. Unfortunately, we had norovirus, so rather than infect the hospital, we cancelled our appointment only to be sent another one for July. A full six months after her last appointment. I phoned on more than one occasion to beg for something sooner to no avail. So for the last six months of refused feeds, poor weight gain, refusal to eat solids, weight loss, missed developmental milestones and a huge amount of parental upset and anguish, we have had no support, no advice, no ideas about how to move forward and no compassion from east surrey. She hasn't seen the same paediatrician more than once and I have no idea who her next appointment is with.

We have seen a very lovely dietician a couple of times since december but really feel that the steps they have put in place have been a rather loose fitting plaster which actually haven't made much of a difference.

Dear Sauce,

I am very sorry about the poor support for you and your daughter. You can either contact my colleague Ian (details above) or email me bill.kilvington@sash.nhs.uk and I will ensure that we make contact and get your daughter to see an appropriate consultant quickly.

Regards

Bill
