"My diabetes"

About: Royal Berkshire Hospital / General medicine

(as the patient),

Diagnosed 8 years ago after experincing symptoms for much longer. Initially lost weight and controlled sugars through diet. Gradually, the sugars went up. Was told to treat with "five a day", "eat less", "eat less fat" and my BG's went higher and higher. Was continuously told I was eating too much and must be mistaking what I was eating. Got to the point where I was to be treated with insulin and in danger of uncontrollable weight gain.

Decided my body must be producing its own sugar and stopped eating to prove it. At last saw a drop in sugars, so changed my entire diet to fat high, protein rich food with as few carbs as possible.

Have now lost lots of weight and achieved a 6 monthly BG average of 5. 6. My specialist thinks he can't do anything more for me, and I look forward to losing more weight and coming off some more medication.
