"Why can't we get an appointment?"

About: Leicester General Hospital

Anything else?

My grand-daughter, whom I am bringing up, was referred, by our GP, to the Rheumatology Clinic at Leicester General in May 2013. We had a letter dated 4th June to phone and make an appointment. On phoning on 6th June we were told there were no appointments until October 2013! The call centre said they'd forward details to the Rheumatology Clinic who would be in touch with us. You state on your home page that patients needing an at the Rheumatology clinic at Leicester General are being seen in 4 weeks. So why are we denied this service? I phoned the call centre again on the 18th June to say we had heard nothing from the Clinic. The person I spoke to said there still were no appointments available at the Rheumatology Clinic until October but that they would refer us again to the clinic and felt sure they would be in touch very shortly. Here we are on the 25th June and still nothing! Meanwhile we have a very sick 14 year old struggling to get through early stage GCSE's in pain and distress and nobody seems to care. What do we have to do to get help and to get an appointment?

Dear Chris, We are sorry to read about your frustrations in sorting out an appointment for your granddaughter. As you are aware your granddaughter was initially referred by her GP to the adult Rheumatology team at the Leicester General Hospital for a tertiary rheumatology opinion. As your granddaughter is a child, the referral was appropriately forwarded to the Children’s Dept. Having gone through the detailed GP referral letter, the paediatric team felt that, under the current patient pathways, your granddaughter should ideally be reviewed at Peterborough Hospitals by the visiting Tertiary Paediatric Rheumatology team, QMC, Nottingham for a second opinion. We have spoken with your Granddaughter’s GP and he has kindly agreed to arrange a referral to the Tertiary Paediatric Rheumatology Services led by QMC, Nottingham for her either locally or at Nottingham. Once again we are sorry for any inconvenience caused in processing the GP referral. We wish her all the best. Kind regards Consultant Paediatrician Children’s Hospital Leicester’s Hospitals
