"Went into have an op on 21-12-07 ..."

About: Watford General Hospital

(as the patient),

What could be improved

Went into have an op on 21-12-07 at 7am;having been told I would be having the op I got into my gown etc, went to the ward and waited.

Operation cancelled at 4.50pm.Informed the theatre time had run out. Another date to be sent again!

Of course as a former nurse I empathise with the poor nurses and doctors on the frontline.

However, one does not just go in for an op, as a mother, carer, employee, student etc I myself have to prepare and rearrange and rearrange again to fit into new dates. Communication is paramount as is repecting the patients psychological needs and preparation for an op as well as the physical needs.

I would also like to be treated as an individual with dignity and respect and not feel a name on a list being moved around and around trying to 'fit me in'. The poor nurses having to bear the bad news each time an op is cancelled.

As I recall my training in the 1980's and the matron installing clear ethics and morals into me I would like to once again see the NHS improved and a service nationally we are proud of which in turn will I am sure increase the moral of the workforce and assit them to feel respected and valued.

I will of course be home for xmas and will again wait for an appointment to drop on my doormat and start the preparation and waiting game again!!
