"Age comments in pregnancy. "

About: Lister Hospital / Maternity

(as a relative),

My sister is having her first baby. Since we found out the exciting news, at every appointment she's been to, they act like she's committing a sin and it seems like she's being frowned upon.

She's only 14 weeks and I'm disgusted at how they have treated her so far. They have not been reassuring. Once every appointment age has come up and it's ruining this enjoyable time.

I can't quite believe how unprofessional the midwives we have met seem to be being. She's in tears and to top it off today she received a phone call to tell her that she's in the high risk and that she's got till 16 weeks to decide what she wants to do. In those exact words.

I'm truly disgusted and upset that she is being treated like this. I know that midwives are looked upon like wonderful human beings but unfortunately some of them are ruining that belief. I know older women that have had babies and they were never treated in this manner.

Age shouldn't come into it. They panic you even more with comments like "you need to see doctor," you ask "why" and they say "because of your age." They don't word anything in a manner to calm you.

They just make you feel like you're wrong for doing something so amazing. In my opinion, some of them should not be in this career.

Response from Peter Gibson, Associate director, public affairs, East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust

Many thanks for posting these comments and we are concerrned at the nature of the support that your sister is receiving from our midwifery team. Whilst there may be good clinical reasons behind some of the things they have said to your sister, these need to be shared with her in a way that makes her feel positive and supported throughout her pregnancy.

Perhaps you would be willing to contact us on generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net so we could get our head of midwifery to talk with your sister to understand better what is going on so that the right feedback is given to the team. We're sure that given this chance, your sister will see changes in the support she receives.
