NHS Lanarkshire has a No Smoking Policy which bans smoking and the use of electronic cigarettes on the grounds of all NHS premises. The policy aims to protect people from second hand smoke, prevent future generations from starting by setting a healthy example and offers specialist services to those who wish to stop.

NHS Lanarkshire conducted a survey as part of the consultation on the No Smoking Policy. Over 3620 responses were received from staff, patients and visitors; 94 percent agreed that hospital entrances should be smoke free and 89 percent of those who agreed were smokers. We've also received feedback from you regarding smoking at hospital entrances via Patient Opinion.

Respiratory consultant Dr Soong Tan and consultant paediatrician with special interest in respiratory paediatrics, Dr Carol Dryden, say the support of smokers could help reduce the number of people who will develop a respiratory illness in the future.

NHS Lanarkshire is working hard to help and support smokers who wish to quit. Additionally we can help smokers admitted to hospital to manage their nicotine withdrawal with specialist treatment during their time in hospital.

It is estimated that over 70 per cent of people who smoke wish they’d never started. If you are a smoker please help us set a good example to the next generation and prevent them from starting an addiction which they will later regret. If you are attending Health Facilities please smoke before you arrive and once you have left the grounds.

We recognise this change in behaviour will take time to feed through but hope that with public support and the continued efforts of staff we will be able to achieve SMOKE FREE grounds.

If you or someone you know would like support to give up smoking, NHS Lanarkshire Stop Smoking Service is free, friendly and has helped over 17,000 people quit during 2011-2014.
