"Severe Covid survivor Nottingham"

About: Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - City Campus / Respiratory medicine Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust - Queen's Medical Centre Campus / Critical care

(as the patient),

I was admitted to Intensive Care at Queens Medical Centre Nottingham during 12/20 after suddenly becoming very unwell on day 9 of confirmed Covid, I was wheeled into the Covid Resuscitation room where staff were waiting, the next thing I knew was asking a staff member on the ward I was on after the above and she replied mid January, I have no memory of being in intensive care though had bizarre dreams which seemed very, very real which I know now was due to medication given when I was put on life support on Christmas Day, I remained on this for a week and was then moved to Fleming Ward at Nottingham City Hospital were I still had bizarre thoughts and dreams for a while and was shocked when doctors told me how ill I had been.

To cut a long story short I also spent time on Winifred 2 and Jenner Ward.

I really want to give a big thank you to all staff in this difficult time, you are all amazing and brave. After watching the news over the last year and seeing patient on life support I never envisaged it would happen to me. I have been at home now for nearly three weeks and my legs after loosing the ability to walk are gradually improving and I remain breathless at times with Oximeter readings improving all the time but it feels like a slow process.

When this pandemic is over or more likely controlled and a more normal life returns I will bring in presents to ITU, and the three wards mentioned above.

Covid is dreadful and after surviving a severe bout I feel angry at those in our society who disregard the lock down rules, if they saw what is happening in our hospitals maybe they will think differently, sadly a few patients on the wards I was on passed away with staff staying with them as support as this happened, my heart and gratitude went out to these brave workers. I work in the NHS myself in mental health and hope to return to work as soon as possible which may be a while, thank you for my survival.

Thank you so very much for taking the time to tell your story. We know your experience will have been difficult and frightening, as it must be for so many patients at our hospital and across the country. We will share your kind message of thanks and appreciation with the teams on all the wards you have mentioned, and we wish you well in your continued recovery.

Best wishes from us all.

Tracey Stevenson – Matron for Respiratory Medicine & Jo Thompson – Matron for Critical Care
